on behalf of the board of directors, i would like to wish all members a very happy new
year. we are planning many exciting club activities for 2000, including several track
events and a charity fundraiser. wally clark will be heading up the fundraiser committee
to choose the proper theme, and possible locations.
tom brockmiller has presented a calendar of events that contain many great activities for
club members to enjoy. the following events highlight some of the new year's activities:
- driving schools and other events that allow for track experience without racing.
- a focus on club member's personal cars (something that we all think would have great
interest), be it one car with its owners viewpoint or a collector amongst our club.
- new ride and drive destinations with interesting points along the way.
- visits to auto restoration shops and technical tips from mechanics.
our board meetings are scheduled for the second saturday of each month, with a few
exceptions, such as hosted meetings. the meetings are generally scheduled to be held at
the radisson on el segundo, near lax.
i would like to thank earl gandel for a "job well done" as our volunteer editor.
it takes a lot of work to maintain our high standards, and his enthusiasm will be greatly
missed. i also want to thank all of those who write articles and take pictures. rose
cogan, who relentlessly attracts advertisers and nearly covers the entire expense for the
newsletter, deserves a thank you. a special thanks to all of you who participate in
planning, as well as those of you who work on our events, and help our club throughout the
year.
we continue to believe the newsletter is the catalyst for success, enabling us to show our
members who we are and what we do. our newsletter was founded by jeff littrell, whose
inspiration directed it to be one of the highest rated newsletters in the country.
the club is healthy, active and consistently gaining new members. i am honored to be a
part of it. come join us, as we plan the club's activities.
Ride and Drive to the Devil?s Punchbowl

at approximately 9:30 a.m. on sunday, november 21st, twelve ferraris left the denny's
restaurant at roxford on the 5 freeway in sylmar and headed north into the mojave desert.
after approximately an hour or so driving through canyons and desert backroads, we arrived
at the devil's punchbowl. if you haven't been there, you are truly missing a spectacular
natural monument located just south of palmdale. it is a very interesting place and has a
ranger station with live replicas of the native snakes,
animals and birds indigenous to the desert.
some of the more noticeable ferraris were walter meyers' newly purchased 348 speciale.
bill bowdish and his wife ann brought an absolutely spectacular dark blue 365 2+2. tino
mingori was there with his old, now famous 275 gtb4, steve ellsworthy brought his
testarossa, and dave roemer brought a very clean 308. cesar chavarria brought his super
clean black 348 and was the most spirited driver of the day.
all and all it was a fun day for everyone and if i must say so, the hamburgers were the
best we have ever had.
we headed home by 3 o'clock in the afternoon after a great day among our friends.

on sunday, december 5th, "rev" tom shaughnessy presided over an italian car
gathering in san juan capistrano.
it was an impromptu meeting, arranged in less than 10 days by south orange county italian
car lovers. the place is on a hill over looking the city of san juan capistrano, the
mission, and the san diego freeway. the building is the old water district headquarters
facility that "rev" recently acquired.
there were about 25 cars in attendance, including three lamborghini miura's, several
maseratis and alfas, as well as a bevy of ferraris. gary roberts brought his 212, bill
lemaster brought his 206 dino and there were more late model cars. over fifty people
enjoyed a buffet lunch and "homemade" cookies. inside the building (which was
once a water tank!) were several pieces of tom's vintage ferrari stuff, such as a complete
250gt dash hanging on the wall over a crated 250 v-12 motor.
the sounds of all this great machinery arriving was something to hear, but nothing
compared to the overview of the freeway when all this italian machinery left and got on
the freeway on ramp and accelerated up to speed!
a fun time was had by all. watch the calendar of events, as there will be another
gathering of the faithful later this year!
